ATS — Automatic Transfer Switch

An Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) is a power transfer device that automatically moves an electrical load between two sources — typically the mains grid and a standby generator — when the primary source fails. The ATS senses voltage and frequency on both sources, signals the generator to start, and transfers load once the generator is at rated output.
Open-transition ATS systems transfer in 0.1 to 10 seconds depending on configuration and required generator start time. Closed-transition ATS systems transfer in 0–100 milliseconds by momentarily paralleling the two sources. For loads that cannot tolerate any interruption, a Static Transfer Switch (STS) achieves sub-cycle transfer using thyristors.
An Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) operates without operator intervention — it senses outage and transfers load itself. A Manual Transfer Switch (MTS) does the same job but requires an operator to throw the handle. MTS is cheaper and simpler but only suits installations where an operator is always available within minutes of an outage.
For life-safety loads (theatres, ICU, dialysis, dispensary refrigeration) closed-transition or static transfer is strongly preferred because open-transition introduces a power gap that medical equipment can interpret as a fault. NFPA 110 and IEC 60364-7-710 specifically address transfer times and source separation in medical locations.
Size the ATS continuous current at least 10% above the total downstream continuous load, ensure the withstand and closing rating (WCR) is at least equal to the prospective short-circuit current at the switch, and coordinate the upstream breaker so it clears faults faster than the WCR's rated duration. For motor-heavy loads, derate or specify a motor-rated switch.
