A string inverter takes multiple PV modules in series (a "string") and converts the combined DC to AC at one inverter. A micro-inverter sits behind each individual module and produces AC directly. Micro-inverters are more module-independent (one bad module doesn't reduce the others' output) but cost more per kW. String inverters dominate commercial roofs; micro-inverters are popular on residential shaded roofs.
EPRA's net-metering framework allows generators up to 1 MW to export surplus generation to the grid. KPLC installs a bidirectional meter that records both import and export. The customer is credited at the prevailing tariff for export and pays the standard tariff for import; the bill nets the two. Approvals require EPRA-licensed installation and a signed grid-connection agreement.
Anti-islanding is the safety function that requires a solar inverter to disconnect from the grid within 2 seconds (per IEEE 1547) if the grid loses voltage. Without it, the inverter could energise a "dead" grid section, exposing utility crews to live conductors. All certified grid-tied inverters include anti-islanding as standard. Hybrid systems with island-mode capability include a transfer mechanism that allows continued operation off-grid.
Three common tiers: AC Level 2 (7–22 kW, suitable for workplace and overnight residential charging — typically 4–8 hours for a full charge); DC fast charging (50–150 kW, suitable for retail forecourts and service stations — 20–40 minutes for 80% charge); ultra-fast DC (150–350 kW, currently rare in Kenya but emerging for fleet depots). Yes — this is what a hybrid PV system does. A hybrid inverter (or a hybrid ATS with separate inverters) prioritises solar when available, charges a battery for evening use, falls back to grid when both are depleted, and starts a generator only as the last resort. Hybrid systems are increasingly the standard for new commercial installations with reliability or off-grid requirements.
