IEC 60364-7-710 distinguishes between three classes of medical location. Life-safety circuits (theatres, ICU monitoring, dispensary refrigeration) must restore within 0.5 seconds — practically, via UPS bridging an ATS transfer. General hospital loads must restore within 15 seconds via standby generator with ATS. Comfort loads can be re-energised at the operator's discretion.
An IT-system (Isolated Terra) supply uses a 1:1 isolation transformer to deliver power to theatres without a direct earth reference. A line isolation monitor continuously measures insulation resistance to detect first earth faults, allowing the theatre to continue operating safely until the procedure ends. Required by IEC 60364-7-710 for general anaesthesia theatres.
Yes. Factory Acceptance Testing happens in our Nairobi workshop; Site Acceptance Testing happens during a coordinated window agreed with the biomedical engineering team. Where SAT must occur with theatre or ICU loads live, we use temporary feeds and step-load transfers under hospital infection-control protocols.
Monthly exercise under live load is recommended — long enough to bring the generator up to operating temperature (minimum 30 minutes). Annually, a full transfer test under load with NFPA 110-style documentation should be performed. Our maintenance contracts include this, with reports lodged with the hospital's facilities team.
Yes. For phased retrofits we install temporary bypass arrangements that allow live-load transfer to interim feeds while the old panel is replaced. Most retrofit projects can be done over a 2–6 week window without sustained downtime to clinical operations.
